Mastering raglan increases

Yarn Over Increases

Yarn over increases involve creating deliberate holes in your knitting by wrapping the yarn around the needle. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Make a yarn over (YO) :
    • While knitting, bring the yarn from the back to the front of your work.
    • Insert the right needle into the next stitch as if to knit.
    • Wrap the thread around the right needle from front to back.
    • Finish the stitch as usual.
    • The extra loop created is the yarn over.
    • Throws are commonly used for lace designs and decorative elements. Keep in mind that they leave visible holes, which may or may not be desired depending on your project.

Wrap Increases

Rolled increases (also called lifted increases) create a rounded shape at the raglan line. They don't leave holes like throws. Here's how to run them:

  1. Right Lift Augmentation (RLI) :

    • Insert the right needle from the front under the right leg of the stitch located under the next stitch on the left needle.
    • Knit this stitch.
    • This increases the number of stitches without creating holes.
  2. Left Lift Augmentation (LLI) :

    • Insert the right needle from the back under the left leg of the stitch located under the next stitch on the left needle.
    • Knit this stitch.
    • Again, no holes are formed.

The roll-up increases are subtle and blend well into the fabric.

Increases from stitch of previous row

This method is the most discreet and does not significantly alter the number of meshes. Here's how to make it:

  1. Increase from stitch of previous row (LI) :
    • Identify the stitch from the previous row that corresponds to the position of the raglan increase.
    • Insert the right needle under the right leg of this stitch.
    • Knit it.
    • This method thickens the raglan line without leaving visible holes.
